Are you of good report?

One requirement of standing in the office of a bishop is to have a ‘good report’.

 1 Timothy 3: 1 – 7

 1This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.

 2A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

 3Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;

 4One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;

 5(For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

 6Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

 7Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

What does it mean to have a good report?

 It means that you should not be found wanting i.e nothing found that can be held against you. Interesting verse 7 clarifies who should have this report about us. ;those without’ i.e. those that do not belong to the family of God. How careful we need to be.

Lets look at a few examples in scripture:

 Cornelius had a good report among all the nation of the Jews

Acts 10:21-23

 21Then Peter went down to the men which were sent unto him from Cornelius; and said, Behold, I am he whom ye seek: what is the cause wherefore ye are come?

 22And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee.

 23Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied

 Ananias who prayed with Saul to received his sight had a good report of all Jews.

Acts 22:

11And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.

 12And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

 13Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.

 Demetrius had a good report of all men.

3 John 1:11-13

 11Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good. He that doeth good is of God: but he that doeth evil hath not seen God.

 12Demetrius hath good report of all men, and of the truth itself: yea, and we also bear record; and ye know that our record is true.

 13I had many things to write, but I will not with ink and pen write unto thee:

But someone said. Well, the requirement to be of good report in 1 Timothy 3 applies to those who desire the office of a ‘bishop’.

Yes and true, however l think we can safely say that we need to be people of good report as Christians. The examples above indicate  that being of good report is valuable.

Now that we know we should be people of good report, how careful we need to be.  Whatever we do or say, we need to ask ourselves a question, ‘Is this of good report?

Lets walk in integrity with God and man and bring glory to the name of our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.

So l ask again?

Are you of good report?

  1. This is such a timely reminder. We are ambassadors for Christ (2 Cor. 5:20). As such, we must be careful to not bring reproach upon the name of our Lord and upon His gospel.
