Can a Christian be ungodly ?

When we hear the word ‘ungodly’ our minds race to think about ‘those that do not know the Lord’, however if you look at scripture the bible speaks about sinners and the  ungodly.

 To be godly, means to ‘be like God’ act and behave in a ‘godly’ manner.

 Psalm 1:  says:

1Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

 2But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.

 3And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

 Lets take a close look at the first part of verse 1: ‘Blessed in the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly’

Before our minds wander and think about the ungodly advice from those who do not know the Lord, have you ever heard ‘ungodly’ advice from a Christian ? Yes, we all have. Many can bear witnesses of ungodly counsel from Christians. A good example is a person aged 40 not yet married and advised even from Christians to compromise and get married by any means. This is ‘ungodly’ advice which should not be followed.

The bible requires us to be ‘godly’ in this world. For the bible to require this from us means that it is not automatic. We have to make a decision to be ‘godly’ Christians.

Titus 2 :

11For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,

 12Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

We are to deny ungodliness and live ‘godly’ in this present world.

1 Timothy 4: 8

 8For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come.

 Living godly profits not only here but in that which is to come.

 The Lord will not ask us to do what we cannot do. He has empowered s to walk ‘godly’ in this world.

 2 Peter 1

 1Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

 2Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord,

 3According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

 The Lord has given us all thing that pertain unto ‘life’ and ‘godliness’

 We can live godly in this world.

 It is a shame when we come across ungodly behaviour among Christians.

 Let us not be deceived, the Lord is against ungodliness and the wise will live godly.

 Romans 1: 18:

 18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

We are required to be godly.,

 2 Peter 3:

 11Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

 Do you love the Lord?  Then  live godly in tis present world bringing glory to the name of the one who paid the price for us.

  1. Great post – full of truth!
    God bless.

  2. Thanks for reminding us of this call to godly living. I believe we hear too little preaching on the subject of godliness in our churches. But this does not change anything. Rather we preach it or nor; whether we embrace it or not, we have a divine mandate to pursue and live a life of godliness.
