What’s your foundation like?

The foundation is what carries a building. It is the bedrock of any building. If the foundation is faulty, its just a matter of time before disaster hits.

As Christians we are supposed to have a good foundation. So what are the materials of a good foundation as a Christian?

Luke 6: 47 – 49

Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:

He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

From the above scripture the materials for a good foundation are:

 Hearing His sayings

 Doing  His sayings.

We need to pay particular attention to the word ‘ heareth my sayings’.

When we go to church, or a house meeting, or listen to messages we MUST make sure that what we are listening too is the ‘Word of God’. The reality of it is many are listening to doctrines of men, theological arguments, which will not build up our spirits neither help us in laying a good foundation for ourselves. The word ‘sayings’ also means that we need to be exposed to the ‘Whole’ Word of God and not just a part.

What do l mean? If we don’t hear the Word of God on healing, when we get attacked in body we will not know what to do. If we don’t hear the Word of God on the importance of forgiving others, when we get offended, we will abhor unforgiveness to our own detriment. If we don’t listen to what the Lord is saying to us personally as individuals, e.g., leave that job, relocated, don’t go there yet, we will pay a price for it. The list of ‘His sayings; goes on.

When we attend a church service or meeting we need to evaluate what we have heard. If we keep listening to doctrines of men and each time you leave a service you know that your Spirit man is not being fed, we are really playing with our foundations. God forbid that we come across a trial and have no substance to deal with it.

Hearing is not enough. We need to do what we hear. We must go home and exam the scriptures and do them. All this are materials for a good foundation.

When we hear the Word and don’t do it, we are playing with our foundations. This will cause major problems in times of trials.

Luke 6: 49

But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

If we keep hearing the Word on prayer, and refuse to develop our prayer life, we are calling for trouble when we have trials. If we refuse to keep and do the Word on walking in love with our brethren, we are calling for trouble when we get offended by others. The list goes on.

What we listen to and do will determine how we will react in the day of adversity which comes to all. It  will tell if our foundation can hold us.

When you hear a sermon, ask yourself, is this good material for a good foundation? If l do  keep this Word, will it reinforce my foundation in that area?

How careful and sober minded we need to be.
