A balanced view of righteousness

Many of us have heard sermons on our righteousness in Christ and that we have been made righteous in Him.  This is right, yes we have been made righteous in Christ:

Romans 5:17

King James Version (KJV)

For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.)

1 Corinthians 1:30

King James Version (KJV)

30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

2 Corinthians 5:21

King James Version (KJV)

21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Yes the Lord has made provision for our righteousness in Christ which is very evident from the above scriptures. However, what we don’t hear much about is our own responsibility to live unto what the Lord had already provided for us.

When we get attacked in our bodies, we are quick to say, ‘By his stripes l am healed’ (1 Peter 2; 24), however when we are tempted to sin, or are confronted with sin, how come don’t use the other part of this scripture:

1 Peter 2:24

King James Version (KJV)

24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

I.e. to say, 1 Peter 2: 24 says, l am dead to sin, and l should live unto righteousness therefore sin l resist you.

What the Lord had provided for us in Christ Jesus, we have a responsibility to live unto.  Confessing our righteousness in Christ without making any effort to live unto righteousness is not a balanced approach of our righteousness in Him.

Romans 6:13

King James Version (KJV)

13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.

We are to yield ourselves unto righteousness. (nobody will do it for you)

Romans 6:16

King James Version (KJV)

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

1 Corinthians 15:34

King James Version (KJV)

34 Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame

We are to awake to what we have in Him  which in this acount is righteousness and sin not.

There would be no need for 1 John 1: 9, if we did not have our part to play:

1 John 1: 9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Note the word ‘ cleanse us from all unrighteousness’. There would be no need for the Lord to cleanse us from all  unrighteousness’, if we did not have our own responsibility.

Someone said but is difficult? No it isn’t, you already have the template of righteousness when you became born again.

Ephesians 4:24

King James Version (KJV)

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Let us live in the reality of what God had provided for us in Christ Jesus and bring glory unto His name by living unto righteounsess.
