Holier than thou! really?

Have you ever come across someone with an ‘ holier than thou’ attitude? In other words, l am better than you?

How we need to be very careful as it is by His grace that we have everything that we have. It is also by His grace that we receive and it is mercy that exposes us to what we know.

The bible says that ‘ those that compare themselves with others are not wise’

2 Corinthians 10 12

For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.

This scripture works both ways. While we are not to compare ourselves with those that have more, those that have more are not to compare themselves with those that don’t have. This is the root of ‘hollier than thou’ attitude.

We are all one body. We all are baptised into one body and we all need one another.

Another interesting point is that ‘ to whom much is given much is expected’

Luke 12 48

But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

When we think we have more or have more committed to us, the response should be humility and not an attitude.

The book of Isaiah in chapter 65 was describing some people. Look at what is says and in particular verse 5 :

Isaiah 65 : 1- 5

1I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.

 2I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;

 3A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that sacrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon altars of brick;

 4Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine’s flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels;

 5Which say, Stand by thyself, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a smoke in my nose, a fire that burneth all the day.

Brethren, we are what we are by the grace of God.  We have and know what we know by the grace of God. Lets humble ourselves and serve the Lord our God with an upright heart. A heart that trembles at His Word.

There is no need for an ‘hoiler than thou’ attitude. All it does is shows our carnality. It by His grace we are what we are.
