Words are powerful. Its amazing what our words can do. Ever remember what someone said to you 20 years ago? Its amazing the effect words can have on a person.

Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. (Proverbs 21 verse 18)

Lets look at the sort of words we should avoid and those we should cultivate.

Words to cultivate:

Pleasant words

Proverbs 16 verse 24

Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

Appropriate Words

Proverbs 15 verse 23
A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!

Gracious words:

Ecclesiastes 10 verse 12 

The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

Words to avoid.

Grievous words:

Prov 15 verse 1 

A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

Hasty words:

Prov 29 verse 20

Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

Flattering words:

I Thel 2 verse 5

For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness:

Malicious words:

3 John 10

Wherefore, if I come, I will remember his deeds which he doeth, prating against us with malicious words: and not content therewith, neither doth he himself receive the brethren, and forbiddeth them that would, and casteth them out of the church.
